The most important part of your goats health program is you knowing your goat. Your goat does not have the power of speech to tell you how they are feeling, but they can and DO tell us with their actions and body language. If you spend time with your goat you will know when he is not acting normal. The moment you think he is acting different, it can be a silent signal, an alarm should go off in your head. LISTEN TO IT!
Otherwise in a few days you could have a very sick goat and by then it may be too late! Signs of a Healthy Goat Signs of Concern Bright Eyes Alert Springy Step Runs to Feed Upright Head Flashy Tail Healthy Coat Playful Round Berries

Health questions to ask your Breeder
Vaccinations – If your wether has not received a CD&T or Covexin 8 you will need to give one followed by a booster 30 days later. Any other vaccinations: Sore Mouth, Pneumonia, Case Bac ( recommended in some areas for show and breed stock) Bo-Se (if area is selenium deficient) When vaccinating goats most vaccines are given Sub-Q, pinch a tent of skin and give the injection into this fold rather than into the muscle. Under the front leg (armpit area) or in a pinch of skin on the neck will reduce the odds of unsightly lumps at show time. Many extension offices prefer injections given in the scruff of the neck for qualty assurance purposes. Any antibiotics? What is the withdrawal time if so. Worming – What with and when? Date of birth. Single, twin or triplet? Medicated feed with a coccidia preventative? Coccidia is a tiny parasite in a goats stomach. Weaning, feed changes and moving to a new home can cause stress which in turn can cause coccidia to flourish. De-Worming Your Goat
It is important to have your goats on a good worming program. Most wormers must be given at a much higher dosage than the label calls for. Ask your breeder what type of wormer to use and set a schedule so that you know when your last worming date will before the fair. If you are raising a meat animal you must allow for withdrawal time for any drugs. A list of some withdrawal times is at the bottom of this page.
